Italian chocolate producer Domori works closely with cocoa-producing countries throughout different projects. They cooperate with NGOs, governments, and cooperatives to convert coca-growing areas to cocoa crops.
Domori believes these cocoa plantations should be a source of livelihood for local populations.
In Colombia, Domori worked with the Asoprolan cooperative of coffee and cocoa growers in the Santandereana region of Montana. In this region, the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), the United Nations Agency for Drug Control and Prevention of crime - received land management from the Colombian government to help farmers abandon coca cultivation. So instead, farmers started to grow the Venezuelan Criollo and Trinitario cocoa plants.
To help this transition, Domori has provided technical and training support for local communities. Thanks to their position on the fine chocolate sector market, they introduced this cocoa. As a result, Domori could guarantee growers a price that would convince them to abandon coca plantation and instead choose cultivation cocoa.
